“Strategically, it might be us in this room making the decision in 2028. If we want to secure the Romanian presidency, we cannot be tied to Nicușor Dan forever,” was heard from a liberal in the leaked recording obtained by the media.
The primary concern for the Liberals is to distance themselves from Nicușor Dan in order to avoid being seen as affiliated with the current president, thereby increasing their chances of winning the presidential seat in four years.
The recording also addresses their stance on USR. They consider USR as adversarial as PSD.
“We must be very clear today. Neither PSD nor USR is beneficial. Let’s not start with those issues again,” said Ștefan Stoica.
Liberals Convene at Vila Lac to Discuss Coalition Future with PSD and USR
Members of the National Liberal Party gathered at Vila Lac to address the challenging situation faced by the governing coalition, as tensions continue to mount.
Following the meeting, they released a communiqué calling for “responsibility.”
In an official statement, the Liberals accused the social democrats of breaching the coalition protocol. Bolojan, a PNL leader and Romania’s Prime Minister, intensified the critique by blaming PSD members for “undermining” the government during a TV show.
The exchange of comments continued with Sorin Grindeanu’s response, hinting that the Liberals were leaning towards governance with AUR: “I’ve noticed the ‘signals’ sent by PNL representatives towards AUR,” remarked the social democrats’ leader.
On the opposite side stands the Nicușor Dan-USR core, the group that supported him in the presidential campaign. Meanwhile, the president maintains that there is “rationality” within the coalition.
“In each of the four parties, I see rationality. Obviously, there are discussions, I see them, I am aware of them, but I also see rationality,” stated Nicușor Dan.
