This move to include Trump’s signature marks a first for a sitting president, as traditionally, U.S. banknotes feature the signatures of the Secretary of the Treasury and the Treasurer, not the president, according to P.
The news was initially reported by Vanity Fair.
This is the latest instance of Trump associating his name and likeness with American cultural institutions, following the renaming of the U.S. Institute of Peace, the Kennedy Center’s performing arts building, and a new class of battleships, among other tributes.
Commemorative Gold Coin Featuring Trump’s Image
The plans coincide with ongoing efforts to place Trump’s likeness on a coin.
Earlier this month, a federal arts commission approved the final design for a 24-karat gold commemorative coin featuring Trump’s image, intended to celebrate him on the Fourth of July. Late last year, the U.S. Mint unveiled designs for coins commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence. These designs depicted foundational documents and the Revolutionary War but did not include President Donald Trump, despite allies’ efforts to have his image placed on a coin.
Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, stated in a release that “there is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country” than with U.S. dollar bills bearing Trump’s signature.
U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach commented in a statement that printing Trump’s signature on American currency “is not only appropriate but also well-deserved.”
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing is tasked with producing all banknotes, while the U.S. Mint is responsible for minting all coins.
