Tragic Case of Young Woman Ends in Euthanasia: A Catalan Court Decision

Noelia Castillo, a 25-year-old resident of Barcelona, passed away on Thursday at the Sant Pere de Ribes assisted care facility where she resided, thus concluding a legal battle that extended for more than eighteen months.

Despite the implementation of Spain’s euthanasia law in 2021, Noelia’s situation marked the first instance that required a judicial ruling.

The ultraconservative Catholic group, Christian Lawyers, representing Noelia’s father, Geronimo Castillo, announced on Thursday evening: “Noelia has already been euthanized.”

The organization expressed deep sorrow over her death, emphasizing that this case highlights significant shortcomings in the euthanasia law, which they claim fails to protect the most vulnerable individuals.

They urged politicians to leverage Noelia’s story as a catalyst for urgent legislative reforms to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The case attracted significant attention in Spain, with public interest fueled by Noelia’s young age, her family’s public efforts to halt the process, and the circumstances that led her to seek euthanasia. The courts ultimately upheld her right to end her life.

Catalan Government Approves Her Euthanasia Request

Noelia became paraplegic after a suicide attempt that involved jumping from a rooftop. Her euthanasia petition received approval from the Catalan government in July 2024, but its implementation was delayed as her father, supported by Christian Lawyers, launched a series of legal challenges.

These appeals were dismissed at various levels of the Spanish judicial system, including the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court, clearing the path for the euthanasia procedure to proceed. A last-ditch effort to halt it was also rejected earlier this week.

Since the enactment of Spain’s euthanasia law in 2021, 426 assisted suicide requests were sanctioned in 2024, according to government data. Noelia’s case was unique, being the first to require a judicial decision.

Confined to a wheelchair since 2022, Castillo openly discussed her decision and the suffering that, she claimed, drove her to it.

“I want to leave now and stop suffering, period. No one in my family agrees with my decision,” she stated. She invited her family to bid farewell beforehand but opted to be alone when the injection was administered.

Sexual Abuse Marred Her Past

Noelia’s upbringing was primarily within the foster care system due to her parents’ issues with addiction and mental health. A gang rape in 2022 by three boys at a nightclub was a turning point in her life.

Reports indicate she was sexually abused by a former boyfriend and subsequently by three other men before attempting suicide, according to Spanish media. She did not report the assault because she acted on her suicidal intentions only days afterward.

On October 4, 2022, after consuming cocaine, she leapt from the fifth floor of a building, resulting in paraplegia. She sustained a severe spinal injury, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down and suffering from severe neuropathic pain and incontinence.

Her father tried to obstruct her euthanasia, arguing against her right to die, but she accused him of disregarding her wishes.

Spain is among a few countries that have legalized euthanasia, following a 2021 law with strict prerequisites. It specifies that any mentally competent individual suffering from a “serious and incurable illness” or a “chronic and incapacitating condition” can request assistance in dying.
